What drives the price
- How many pages, and whether the text is written for you
- Languages: a Greek and English site is close to two sites
- Custom design or a template
- Online booking, payments or a shop
- Moving an old site without losing Google rankings: every old address needs a redirect
- Who looks after it afterwards
The running costs people forget
A website is not a one-off cost. Every year there is the domain and the hosting, and from time to time changes and security updates. A .com domain costs about €10 a year at cost; country domains such as .com.cy are priced by their registrars and can cost more. Many studios bundle all of this into a monthly or yearly plan, which is simpler, as long as you know what it includes and that you can leave.
Redesigning without losing Google or your email
- Keep your page addresses, or redirect every old address to the matching new page (Google calls this a site move)
- Copy your email (MX) records before you change any DNS setting, so email keeps working
- Keep the domain registered in your own name
- Check the new site on a phone before it goes live
How to avoid overpaying
- Ask to see designs made from your own content before you commit
- Ask who owns the design, the content and the domain
- Ask what the monthly or yearly fee includes, and what happens if you stop paying it
- Compare the total over three years, not only the first invoice
